Whisky, Wine & Homebrew Festival

McCoole’s Festivals Launches Second Spring Event in May

Whisky, Wine and Homebrew Festival to follow popular McCoole’s Beer Festival

(Quakertown, PA) McCoole’s Festivals, LLC, a partnership of McCoole’s at the Historic Red Lion Inn and Jeff Martin, Jeff Martin Custom Builders, is introducing a second festival to pair with their popular McCoole’s Beer Festival held each spring— a Whisky, Wine & Homebrew Festival, to be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at McCoole’s Arts & Events Place from 3 pm to 7 pm.

Considering the popularity of the McCoole’s Beer Festival featuring over 75 unique beers to be held Saturday, April 26, 2014, which has drawn crowds of 2,000 and more each year, why a second festival? Surprisingly enough, not all attendees at the Beer Festival are beer aficionados. Many come for the festival atmosphere, live music, food and the craft vendors also showcased at the event.

“We thought a festival offering a true homebrew competition not available at our Beer Festival, along with whiskey and wine tastings would appeal to our audience,” states Jan Hench, owner and proprietor of McCoole’s Red Lion Inn Restaurant and Arts & Events Place. “As a craft brewer ourselves with our Red Lion Brewery, we thought introducing a nationally sanctioned competition would bring something new and exciting to the area. Based on interest shown in craft brews, the time for such a competition has come.”

The festival is slated for early May, a week following the annual spring Beer Festival to take advantage of spring weather and avoid conflicts with other area festivals occurring later in the month and the Celtic and Bike festivals held each fall, another popular time for festivals.

The Homebrew competition is anticipated to draw up to 100 entries, including McCoole’s own Red Lion Brewery. Three best of show awards will be presented, along with the top three in each category, officially sanctioned and judged by the American Homebrewers Association and Beer Judge Certification Program (AHA/BJCP). Best of Show winners will be awarded trophies and gift cards to McCoole’s Restaurant and Homestead Product Supply. A certificate and other door prizes will be presented to category winners.

Each entrant is limited to three brew submissions of two 12-oz. or larger bottles for each brew. A $6 application fee is to accompany each brew for this nationally sanctioned contest. All contestants will be given a coupon for $10 off their admission to the festival. Any homebrewer who plans to dispense their brew for crowd tastings are asked to bring a minimum of 24 bottles or a 1/6 or ¼ keg. Anyone bringing home brews to dispense will receive $30 off their admission fee to the festival whether or not they enter the Best of Show competition, and will also have the opportunity to be judged by festival goers. The brewer of the winning brew chosen by the festival crowd will earn a $100 cash prize and the opportunity to be brewed at the Red Lion Brewery and dispensed at McCoole’s Red Lion Inn Restaurant.

In addition to the homebrew tastings, The Whisky, Wine & Homebrew Festival will showcase tastings of Bird Dog Flavored Whiskey; Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey; Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon and Lexington Bourbon Whiskey; along with Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir from California’s J. Lohr and Edna Valley wineries; Italy’s Pio Moscato Brosecco, Argentina’s Kaiken Malbec; and Chile’s Montes Twins Red Blend Cabernet Sauvignon. Live music will be showcased on two stages along with food and craft vendors.

Advance tickets for the Whisky, Wine & Homebrew Festival are $50 and $60 at the door. Designated driver tickets are $10. Advance tickets for the Spring Beer Festival on April 26, 2014 are $35 and $40 at the door, if available. Designated driver tickets are $10 or $15 at the door.
